GEORGE TOWN: DAP will wait for a decision and will continue to discuss with its coalition partner, PKR before deciding to hold the state election in Penang. However, DAP secretary-general, who is also Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng hoped the issue would not drag on for too long and it should be decided soon.

"We will continue to discuss but surely not for too long. If it is too long then it would not be practical.

As such, we hoped we could continue to discuss and give confidence to our partners in Pakatan Harapan based on mutual respect," he said at a press conference here Wednesday.

On Tuesday, PKR decided it was still not confident with the DAP proposal to hold a snap election in Penang.

PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the unanimous decision was made at the party's Central Leadership Council (MPP) last night after taking into consideration the views of the people.

Asked if there was a time frame for PKR to make a decision, Lim said he did not want to set a fixed period as PKR would be sending a top leadership delegation to explain its decision to the DAP leadership soon.

"We have to be within a reasonable time. You cannot fix the time frame. If you talk about (election) next year then it is not possible. Not possible at this present moment. (When) we talk about election it has to be done quickly, we can not just drag on like this.

"Unless new circumstances have taken place or changed, otherwise, I think it has to be decided quickly.

We cannot just leave the thing hanging like that," he said.

Asked if PKR did not agree with the proposal to hold a snap election in the state, Lim said DAP and PKR would discuss first before making any speculations.

Last Wednesday, Lim told a news conference that DAP would give time to its coalition partners in Pakatan Harapan (PKR and Amanah) to discuss before deciding on the state election.

The state election proposal was raised after Lim was charged for corruption.– Bernama
