Kota Kinabalu: A "Save Life Charity Run for Thalassaemia" is on the cards to enhance public awareness on the importance of going for thalassaemia screening, especially those who wish to marry. The Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (DPMM) Sabah through its women's wing, Dewanita Sabah, will be staging the charity run together with the Sabah Thalassaemia Association on Sept 25.

DPMM Sabah President Datuk Aq. Buhtamam Ag. Mahmun said it is imperative couples undergo the screening to find out whether they are thalassaemia carriers so that they could be prepared for any eventualities.

"We are jointly organising the charity run not only to assist the Sabah Thalassaemia Association to raise funds but also targeting to reach out to as many people as we can to raise awareness on the importance of undergoing the screening and to provide them with the facts about thalassaemia.

"We are targeting a minimum collection of RM30,000 from 500 participants in the run and more than 50 per cent of the proceeds would be donated to the Association.

"We hope the people of Sabah will take part in the run," he said after launching the charity run programme at his office in Metro town, here, Thursday.

Also present were Dewanita Sabah Chairman Dg. Halimah Md Yusof and Sabah Thalassaemia Association President Francis Mujin.

He said they chose to help the Sabah Thalassaemia Association as it needs more funds to carry out awareness programmes in Sabah and to buy a special machine that removes excessive iron from the patients' body for its members who cannot afford to buy the machine.

Hence, Ag. Buhtaman said he encouraged the corporate sector and government-linked companies to support the run.

He said the seven-kilometre run, which will be flagged off at the marching field of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) at 6.45am, is divided into four categories, namely, men's open category, veteran men, women's open and veteran women.

"Each participant who registers for the run will be getting a T-shirt, a bib, goodies, e-certificate and a medal.

"The registration fee before July 31 is RM60 per person and RM55 per person for a group of a minimum six people, while from Aug 1 until 31, the registration fee is RM70 per person and RM65 per person for a group of a minimum six persons.

For enquiries, contact Farah at 019-8023938, Diyana at 016-8176597 and the DPMM Sabah office at 088-263724.

In line with its main objective, Ag. Buhtaman said they will also be working together with the Health Ministry here to provide free screening for thalassemia at the event on Sept 25.
