Kota Kinabalu: Teachers Education Institute (IPG), Gaya Campus here held Health and Hygiene workshop for its 40 trainees recently. It was jointly held with Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sabah branch and International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC).

It was the first time the campus was having such programme which benefited trainees in terms of enhancing their teaching capability and engaging proper method of delivering health and hygiene promotions which would be useful when they serve in their respective schools in the future.

Among the activities carried out were role plays, understanding and presenting of communicable diseases, group presentations and health awareness talks among others.

One of the topics were on medical information and the risk of contracting diseases like malaria, cholera, dengue and tuberculosis were emphasised.

The trainees were then separated into five groups where they made their presentation on their findings.

According to programme coordinator Jenny Kwong, IPG looks forward to have similar courses in the future as it is beneficial not only to the trainees' knowledge but also helps to spread awareness on the importance of health.

"Everyone should play their role in creating awareness on health. Our trainee teachers would soon be going out to teach in schools and this programme is appropriate so that when they go out to serve in their schools, they are well prepared," said Jenny.

Present at the workshop were Richard Saddier and Donnie Leong from ICRC who were also the facilitators of the programme while Elizabeth Sikayun represented MRCS Sabah.

According to Richard, ICRC had been actively working alongside MRCS in carrying out health awareness programmes in schools due to lack of awareness on hygiene and personal care.

School children are their target group to impart such knowledge as they can absorb information easily and hence share it with their families at home.

IPG Deputy Director Dr Rosmawati Hamzah thanked ICRC and MRCS for conducting such programme.
