Kuala Lumpur: The wife of a popular actor was among 28 Immigration Department personnel detained for alleged involvement in a human trafficking syndicate, said Deputy Inspector-General of police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim. He said the suspects including the 33-year-old woman were nabbed in a special operation conducted in Putrajaya last Tuesday.

"They are suspected of falsifying documents to speed up entry of foreigners into the country without going through proper procedures," he said.

Noor Rashid said police did not rule out the possibility that senior immigration officers were also involved in the case.

He said further investigations were being conducted to identify other individuals who might be involved.

The suspects were being detained under the Prevention of Crime Act (POCA) 1959.

Meanwhile, in GEORGE TOWN, the police are on the hunt for at least two men who shot at them during a car chase in Seberang Perai on Thursday night.

Penang Police Chief Datuk Abdul Ghafar Rajab said no one was injured in the incident which occurred at about 10.30pm after they were informed that a car was seen being driven in a suspicious manner.

As two police patrol cars approached the suspects' vehicle, a Honda City with a defective registration plate, the suspects drove away fast pursued by the police, he said.

Abdul Ghafar said the suspects fired several shots at the police cars during the chase from Kampung Acheh and their vehicle crashed through a lane at the Juru Toll Plaza.

He said the police believed that there were at least two people in the car as the shots were fired from the front passenger side of the vehicle.
