Double blow for a Tawau mum

Tawau: It was double blow for a woman whose son became a kidnapping victim 12 days ago – her house was among the more than 20 that was destroyed in a fire at Kg Pukat, Tanjung Batu Laut, near here, Friday."I am facing a big test. Only 12 days ago, my son became a victim of kidnapping victim and today, my house is destroyed by fire," said Hasmiah Lahap, 50.

Her son, Fandy Bakrin, 26, was among five people kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group on July 18.

Hasmiah, who lost everything in the fire, pleaded for assistance from members of the public.

"I do not have anyone to depend on since my son was kidnapped. Today, I also lost my house.

My family is facing one misery after another," she added.

Hasmiah lived in the house with her 16-year-old daughter and 6 year-old granddaughter.

Hasmiah poured her heart out to Tanjung Batu State Assemblyman, Datuk Hamisah Samat, when she came visiting after hearing of the fire incident.

Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed that Fandy and his friends who went missing at Dent Haven, Tambisan, Lahad Datu, were kidnapped by Abu Sayyaf.

The other kidnap victims were; Abd Rahim Summas,62, from Kampung Tanjung Batu, Tawau; Tayudin Anjut,45, from Kampung Tanjung Batu Darat, Tawau; Mohd Ridzuan Ismail,32, from Felda Jengka 7, Bandar Jengka, Pahang; and Mohamad Jumadil Rahim,23, from Batu 2, Jalan Apas, Tawau.
