Sabah grab 4 more gold medals

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah contingent ended the 2016 Sukma Games in Sarawak with a flourish as they bagged four gold medals as of press time to help surpassed their gold medal tally achieved in Perlis two years ago.They have so far collected a total of 23 gold medals compared to 21 in Perlis.

Two gold medals from the women sepak takraw teams are yet to be decided as the matches were to be played in Miri on Sunday night.

The biggest shock of the day was the unheralded mixed pair of Christian Chin and Nur Sharneem Iman who took the tennis title by defeating their Selangor opponents in the final.

Sabah Tennis Association President Johnson Koh, who is also the team manager, was in tears after the triumph.

"I am really lost for words as this is the first time that Sabah tennis had ever win a medal of any colour.

I and all the coaching staff and officials were in tears after the win.

" We did not set any target but the players were told to play the best to justify the chance to be included in the contingent.

"The team spirit was superb. The whole team are very happy that we finally made it and we are grateful to all who gave their support," he said.

Boxing also defied the odds by taking two gold medals on the final day through Mohd Hudzaifah Reitz who was expected to deliver the gold in the 69kg and the Samuel Johnson Micheal in the 75kg.

The two gold medals also exceeded the one medal target set by MSN.

The lawn bowls team also came good on Saturday with one gold, one silver and one bronze.

The gold came from Siti Solehah Halim and Nurfarahim Jamsari in the women pairs , Abdul Khan Majal, Mohd Shaffik Abdul Murah and Muhd Hafiz Firdaus in the men triples while the bronze came from the men pairs of Abd Rajib Rajan and Muhd Hasyir Halim.

The other silver came from gymnast Brandon Denoley Louis in the parallel bar and he also contributed one bronze from the vault while four other bronze medals were won by cyclist Mohd Faizikry Jumah in the men cross country event, two from Caroline Joachim in the women 75kg weightlifting and the football team who edged Pahang 4-2 on penalties after both teams tied 2-2 in normal time.
