32 Sembulan polluters are ordered to clean up daily

Kota Kinabalu: Thirty-two locals who polluted their area in Sembulan with rubbish were ordered to do a month's community service by the Sessions Court on Monday.Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad gave them the directive under the Compulsory Attendance Order (CAO) including the four villagers namely, Nurazi Ahmad, Norain Lamilah, Norsidah Garingan, Mohd Diah Omar who admitted to the charge last week.Under the CAO, Ainul ordered all of them to clean their respective areas for four hours daily.ADVERTISEMENT They were released on a bond of RM2,000 without surety and will get down to work today (Tuesday).Ainul is expected to monitor them cleaning their surroundings at 8.30am. The CAO which is provided for under the Offenders Compulsory Attendance Act 1954, is an alternative for imprisonment imposed by the court to offenders without affecting their lives in the community.Earlier, Ainul gave them two options, whether they wanted to pay a fine of RM10,000 in default ten weeks' jail or do the clean-up under the CAO and all of them chose the latter.ADVERTISEMENT Meanwhile, a foreigner married to a local, was placed on a good behaviour bond for two years for committing a similar offence to ensure the cleanliness of his premises.All of them were found putting, throwing and dumping garbage in their surroundings which come under the jurisdiction of City Hall at 9am on July 23 and 26 this year at Kg Sembulan, here.

The offence under Section 3(a) of the Kota Kinabalu City Anti-Litterbug Bylaw Offence 2005 carries a fine of up to RM10,000, and a fine of RM500 per day if the person continues to commit the offence.During the proceedings held in the Mobile Court at Sembulan, Ainul was informed by Prosecuting Officer Latiza Latip from City Hall that based on their inspection their surroundings were clean but there was still some rubbish.The court also heard that the new cases were registered following inspection by City Hall into other areas which were not included in the gotong royong conducted by the Environmental Working Group of Kota Kinabalu Court in collaboration with City Hall and other government agencies recently. Chief Justice of Malaysia Tun Arifin Zakaria, Chief Justice of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Richard Malanjum, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Edward Yong and Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai also took part in the gotong-royong.Ainul also issued warrants of arrest for three people including one Salma who were absent to face a similar charge against them.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
