Cop denies receiving RM1,200 bribe

Ipoh: A policeman pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here Thursday to receiving a RM1,200 bribe two years ago. Corporal Mohamad Sukeri Othman, 35, attached to the North Zone Highway Patrol Unit (Bandar Baharu-Changkat Jering) pleaded not guilty after the charge was read out to him before judge S. Indra Nehru.

Mohamad Sukeri was charged with accepting RM1,200 in cash from V. Tamil Vanan as an inducement not to take action against him on suspicion of carrying liquor with unpaid taxes on a Toyota Avanza car at the Gunung Semanggol rest and service area on the North-South Expressway at 1.50pm on Nov 7, 2014.

The charge, under Section 17(a) of the Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 carries a maximum 20 years imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Wahidah Jalaluddin, from the MACC offered bail at RM5,000 but the accused's counsel, P.Ravee sought for a reduction as his client had to take care of his wife and four children.

Indra Nehru set bail at RM4,500 with one surety and fixed Aug 30 for a re-mention of the case. –Bernama
