Govt serious in improving wellbeing of elderly: Musa
Kota Kinabalu: Senior citizens are contributors to the nation's socio and economic development and it is the responsibility of society to appreciate and care for their welfare.Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman (pic) said the State government is always giving serious attention to improve the people's wellbeing, including the wellbeing of the elderly.

"This is because we want to ensure that all layers of society are able to enjoy the development implemented by the government and nobody will be left behind," he said at the 12th National Geriatric Conference here, Thursday.

Musa's speech was read by Special Tasks Minister Datuk Teo Chee Kang.

Also present were State Health Director Dr. Christina Rundi, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Director Dr. Heric Corray, QEH Head of Department of Medicine Datuk Dr Jayaram Menon, QEH Head of Geriatric Unit Dr. Peter Selestine and Malaysia Society of Geriatric Medicine President Prof Dr Philip Poi.

More than 200 participants, including a significant number of primary care physicians and general practitioners, are attending the three-day conference which began Thursday which would feature prominent local and international speakers who will deliver talks on geriatric medicine.

The conference is being held in Kota Kinabalu for the first time.

Musa said the State government had implemented various efforts to help senior citizens continue to lead healthy and quality lives.

"Every year, the Government allocates huge amounts of funds to senior citizen associations to enable them to carry out their activities. The government also established the Social and Welfare Programme to help the needy including our senior citizens.

"Surely, the commitment to assist the senior citizens will continue to be carried out to ensure they will not be neglected," he said.

Musa praised the organisation of such conference and hoped it would nurture the spirit of collaboration between the government, the Health Ministry and NGOs while at the same time, increase the knowledge Health Ministry's staff, thus improving the quality of health service in the State.

"The people in Sabah are very lucky because Queen Elizabeth Hospital provides geriatric service which specialises in the care of the elderly.

"Therefore, I hope that the conference today will achieve its objectives towards producing more geriatricians in the future and extend the service Statewide so that our elderly in other parts of the region will get the same health service as provided in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital," he said.
