Kota Kinabalu: Fifty-four per cent of Sabah's 3.4 million people are urban dwellers, said Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister Datuk Halimah Mohd Sadique. She revealed this when opening the 25th Earoph (Eastern Regional Organisation for Planning and Human Settlement) World Congress, here, Tuesday.

Earoph is an international non-governmental organisation under Unescap (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia Pacific).

She was representing Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar who was elected as the next Earoph head.

"As we all know, urbanisation is occurring at an unprecedented rate; by 2050 three quarters of the world's people will live in urban environments.

"For Malaysia today, more than 70 per cent of our 31.7 million people are living in urban areas.

"We face a great challenge in this relatively young and small country with an estimated 44.5 million population by 2040 that will have to be accommodated within the less than 30 per cent of land designated for future growth in Malaysia.

"It is indeed vital that we have to be resilient in all sectors to improve the quality of living of urban dwellers.

"We need the right actions and strategies, we need the right people to lead, we need adequate financial strength to do all that we must do, and more than all that, we need the right partners to grow with," Halimah said.

She said Malaysia is proud to host the 9th World Urban Forum in Kuala Lumpur in February 2018, which will help the country to learn from the best in order to leapfrog towards a more sustainable future.
