Kuala Lumpur: The Ministry of Health will set up two more blood banks – in Sungai Petani, Kedah, and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah – for the convenience of patients. Its minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said besides the National Blood Centre (NBC) in Kuala Lumpur, the two new blood centres would increase the efficiency and effectiveness of transfusion medicine services for patients in the region.

"Apart from the purpose of collecting blood from donors, the new facilities will be set up to ensure safe blood transfusion for patients," he said.

He was speaking to reporters after officiating the national-level 2016 World Blood Donor Day Celebration and appreciation night with the theme 'Blood Connects Us All', here.

Also present were Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya, the ministry's Medical Development director Datuk Dr Azman Abu Bakar and NBC director Dr Noryati Abu Amin.

Earlier, Dr Subramaniam, in his opening speech, said that Malaysians were becoming more aware of the importance of blood donation.

In 2015, a total of 704,054 bags of blood were collected compared to 675,315 bags of blood the year before.

"What's more encouraging is that a total of 233,644 individuals came forward as new donors last year, while 472,770 people were repeat donors," he said.

During the ceremony, he also launched the 'KwikBlood' application - a joint corporate social responsibility project by Syarikat Idaman System Sdn Bhd and NBC.

The application is designed to help educate and provide information about the NBC and transfusion services across the country.

Also launched at the event was the 'Darah Satria' programme organised by 1M4U to be held in 20 locations across the country, to encourage youth to engage in health related activities. – Bernama
