Kota Kinabalu: The Road Transport Department (RTD) has rubbished claims that vehicle owners must get biometric verification to renew their road tax starting September 1.The claims, which have been spreading on social media and WhatsApp, stated that vehicle owners must visit RTD offices to get biometric verification for road tax renewal.

RTD said the process to renew the road tax has not changed. Vehicle owners or representatives can visit any RTD office and no biometric verification is required.

"Starting September 1, vehicle owners who renew their road tax will be issued with a new vehicle ownership certificate (VOC) to replace the current registration card or grant.

"VOC will also be issued to those who make amendments to their details on the grant. The issuance of the first VOC is free of charge.

"For vehicles which have obtained the VOC, the RTD can issue a new copy of the VOC at the request of the vehicle owner in case of any amendments or corrections in vehicle records," RTD said in a statement.

RTD advised the public not to easily believe messages spread on social media without confirming it first with the department.
