Don't allow any parties to destroy peace: Musa

Sandakan: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman again reminded the people to value peace in the country, especially during this time when the world is witnessing conflicts in various regions.Speaking during the Sandakan Day Memorial Service Monday, Musa said the people must also not allow any parties to destroy the peace in the State and country. "We must not allow any parties to undermine what we have built and let the sacrifices of those who fought during the war to be in vain," he said. His speech was read by Special Affairs Minister Datuk Teo Chee Kang.ADVERTISEMENT He said the war heroes including local communities who risked their lives in helping the Allied soldiers deserve to be remembered for it was their sacrifices that brought peace to the State.He urged the people, including the future generation, to always remember the role they had played in history.Meanwhile, British High Commissioner to Malaysia Vicki Treadell said the dark chapter in Sabah history serves as a reminder of the perils of war.She also said that it also underlines a historic link that exists between countries. "This is why Britain and Australia remain one of Malaysia's closest allies," she said. Over 2,000 Australian and British soldiers died in the notorious Death March during the war 71 years ago. Also present during the ceremony were Dr Angela McDonald, Australia's deputy High Commissioner to Malaysia, Edgard Kagan, Charge D'Affairs of the United States to Malaysia, Datuk Pang Yuk Ming, Tourism, Culture and Environment Assistant Minister and Datuk James Wong, Sandakan Municipal Council president.
