RIO DE JANEIRO: Malaysian men's doubles pair Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong emulated compatriots Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying by reaching the final of the men's doubles event at the Rio Olympic Games here, Tuesday.V Shem-Wee Kiong downed Chai Biao-Hong Wei of China 21-18, 12-21, 21-17 in a closely fought semi-final encounter lasting 64 minutes.

They are now guaranteed at least a silver medal and will meet either Fu Haifeng- Zhang Nan of China or Great Britain's Marcus Ellis-Chris Langridge in Friday's final.

The Malaysian pair had on Monday stunned world number one pair Lee Yong Dae/Yoon Yeon Seong from South Korea 17-21, 21-18, 21-19 in the quarterfinals. It was only their second win over the Koreans in eight encounters.

With Tuesday's result and Monday's mixed doubles semi-final win, Malaysians will now feature in two Olympic finals, the first in the history of the Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, in KUALA LUMPUR, Cham May May, the wife of shuttler Chan Peng Soon believes her husband will come home from the Rio de Janeiro Olympics with the mixed double's gold.

May May said family members and friends were very excited and always monitored Peng Soon's progress in the competition with partner Goh Liu Ying.

"I'm very proud that my husband has managed to reach the final of the mixed doubles competition in Rio and with that, the possibility of bringing home Malaysia's first ever gold medal is better.

"It has always been his dream to achieve Olympic glory and now it is only one match away, so close yet so far.

Fingers crossed tomorrow we will be celebrating our nation's first gold medal.

"We are all in unison in supporting him no matter what medal he brings back. As long as he has tried his best, we are all very proud of him," May May told Bernama when contacted Tuesday. Peng Soon is a father of two children, Milton Chan (son) and Hannah Chan (daughter).

Peng Soon-Liu Ying have already assured themselves of a silver medal after making it to the final.

Meanwhile, Mobile Virtual Network Operator, XOX Bhd (XOX) will offer a reward of RM100,000 to mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying, if they win the nation's first ever Olympics gold medal.

"XOX wants to invite all Malaysians to provide spiritual and emotional support to these national sporting heroes in their quest for glory and a place in the history books," he added.
