MIRI: Interpol's assistance has been sought in locating the alleged mastermind behind the murder of Miri PKR branch secretary Bill Kayong, who was shot on June 21.State CID chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Dev Kumar said police believed corporate figure Datuk Stephen Lee Chee Kiang (pic), 45, was hiding in Melbourne, Australia.

Dev said Lee was believed to have fled to Singapore from Miri on June 23, two days after the victim was gunned down.

"Lee then left for Melbourne on July 3 from Singapore. His location is unknown and police have sought Interpol's help," Dev said.

Lee is the Managing Director of an oil palm plantation firm based in Sarawak. He is among three people believed connected to the murder.

The other two who are also still at large have been identified as Lee's personal assistant Chin Wui Chung@Ah Chung, 50, and KTV lounge owner Kong Sien Ming, 35.

"We believe they are hiding in the country. Warrants of arrest were issued against the three on July 19," he said.

Last month, car repossessor Mohamad Fitri Pauzi, 29 was among two people charged with murdering Kayong.

The other accused was pub owner Lie Chang Loon, 37, who was charged with abetting Fitri in the murder.

The case has been fixed for mention on Aug 30.

Kayong, who was the political secretary to Miri Member of Parliament Dr Michael Teoh, was gunned down at a traffic light intersection on Jalan Miri-Bintulu at 8.20am on June 21.

He was an advocate for social issues, especially indigenous rights and land issues.

Dev said the task force investigating the murder has also concluded its investigation into an assault on a longhouse chief, which might be related to the case.

Longhouse chief Jambai Jali and his wife were attacked by two men wielding a samurai sword and baseball bat last year.

A car chase then ensued before Jambai's car skidded and turned turtle in Jalan Pujut-Miri here on Nov 26, last year.

Jambai sustained stab wounds on the right hand, while his wife suffered injuries on the head. The attack was believed to be motivated by a dispute on a piece of Native Customary Rights land in Bekelilit, Bekenu, near here.

Three people aged between 23 and 29 were charged with attempted murder and committing mischief.

Police are still looking for another suspect, one Kong Chin Bing.
