Support for IS: Another charged

Kota Kinabalu: A second person was brought to court on Wednesday to face a charge of providing support to the Islamic State (IS) terror group.Local Bajau Aszroy Achoi, 25, from Kota Belud, was produced before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun.He was earlier escorted to court by heavily armed balaclava wearing police.ADVERTISEMENT He is accused of knowingly giving support to IS on two Facebook accounts under the name of Yohyo Irranun Peace AlBorneozy and Yohyo Illa'nun AlSaba Malizia.Aszroy, who does menial work, allegedly committed the offence between May 8 and July 19 this year at Kg Kota Bungan, Jalan Kudat in Kota Belud.However, no plea was recorded from him after the charge was read to him.Aszroy faces imprisonment for life or jail of up to 30 years or with a fine and liability of forfeiture of any property used or intended to be used in connection with the commission of the offence if convicted under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code.ADVERTISEMENT Deputy Prosecutor Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali applied for a new mention date pending the transfer of the case to the High Court.She did not offer bail to Aszroy as the case was specified as a security offence under the first schedule of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

Jessica fixed Oct 4 for mention and ordered Aszroy, who was not represented, remanded further.On Tuesday, a local Javanese, Mohd Firdaus Asren Saputra B M S Aspren, was charged in the Magistrate's Court with five counts of IS-related terrorism activates.Mohd Firdaus, 34, a travel agency operator, is accused of knowingly canvassing support for IS via the Telegram app and knowingly giving support to the militant group's use of explosives in terrorism activities carried out with intent to advance an ideological struggle and with intent to threaten the public in Malaysia.He allegedly committed the offences between March 25 this year and June 29 No 102, Kg Contoh, Petagas in Putatan.Mohd Firdaus was also accused of knowingly dealing with terrorist property by allowing the deposit of money into a Maybank account under the name of one Bukhori bin Che Noor for the benefit of the Islamic State.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

He allegedly committed the offence at 3.50pm on April 30 this year and at 10.18pm on June 30 at the Maybank Karamunsing branch here; at 4.16pm on April 1, 2016 at the Maybank Putatan branch; and at 11.16pm on June 2, this year at the Maybank Kota Kinabalu International Airport branch.No plea was taken from him and his case will be re-mentioned on Sept 7.
