Papar: A government housing scheme to rent houses to married couples aged below 30 in the country under the '1Malaysia Transit Home Programme' should be extended to single people.Umno Papar Youth Chief Dato' Armizan Mohd Ali said the transit home programme not only could reduce the financial burden of young couples especially those with low income but also single people who fall under the same category.

"The government should consider our proposal as we want the young and single people who have low income to be considered to rent the People's Housing Project (PPR) units under the 1Malaysia Transit Home Programme.

"We also hope that such programme be immediately extended to main districts and townships in Sabah such as Kota Kinabalu and nearby areas," he said, adding it was one of the three motions raised in the wing's 25th delegates meeting held at a multipurpose hall here.

Armizan said this to Daily Express after Umno Malaysia Youth Exco member Mohd Najib Mohd Isa officiated at the meeting which was also attended by Umno Papar Divisional Chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Ismail, his deputy Datuk Ghulam Haidar Khan Bahadar, Papar MP Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin, Malaysia Umno Youth Information Chief Datuk Jamawi Jaafar and other wing members.

Armizan said the provision to include young married couples to rent the units was introduced in 2014.

"To achieve sustainable wellbeing particularly youths, we are proposing that the 1Transit Home Programme consider extending the opportunity of renting the units to single people.

"This is because they are also facing difficulties in renting rooms or houses that they can afford in big cities and townships as well as in urban areas," he said.

On the second motion, Armizan said the formulation of policy and programmes by the State government to establish a 'Land Bank' for affordable houses should be applied in each district.

He said this is aimed at ensuring the people get to own houses and to fully support the State government's commitment in safeguarding the natives' interest in the context of land ownership through the issuance of Communal Titles since 2009.

As for the last motion, Armizan said the wing supported the setting up of a Malaysian Building Academy (ABM) in the country that is expected to commence next year in Kg. Beringgis here that will also be made as a mini hub for education.

Apart from these, he also proposed the setting up of a Special Committee on Economic Development to create ample job opportunities and elevate the socio-economic standard of the people here.

"With this committee, a proposal to prepare an economic development plan for Papar to further improve the economic situation here and capitalise on its potential could be forwarded to the State and Federal level.

"The committee must be joined by professionals, economists and technocrats among youths including industry players so that vital and practical ideas and inputs to enhance economic development could be looked into," Armizan said.

In the meeting, Najib also presented best awards for career, sport leadership and excellence in sports and distributed contributions to two Islamic centres to learn and memorise the Quran at Kg Benoni and Kg Sungai Padang.
