Gold hopes rest on Chong Wei
Kota Kinabalu: Chinese duo Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan defeated Malaysia's Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong to win gold in the men's badminton doubles at the Rio Games on Friday.Malaysia won the first game 21-16 before China got back in the match with a 21-11 victory in the second.

The Chinese pair clinched the third and final game 23-21 in a dramatic finish. The match was telecast live by Astro.

This put Malaysia's medals haul at 3 silvers and a bronze. The other silvers came from the mixed doubles badminton pair of Chan Peng Soon and Goh Lui Ying, in addition to the silver from Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Hoong in the women's 10m platform synchronised diving event.

The bronze went to Azizulhasni Awang in cycling.

The elusive historic first gold medal for Malaysia now resting squarely on the shoulders of Datuk Lee Chong Wei who faces Chen Long in the Men's Singles final at 8.20pm Malaysian time tonight. He overcame a stiff challenge from arch-rival Lin Dan to secure a berth in the final (see separate story on this page).

Malaysians held their breath as Goh and Wee Kiong came within a whisker of claiming the gold in the rubber set as they had two chances to take the match point. But on both occasions, Tan and Goh's service came short at the crucial moment allowing their opponent the lifeline to seal the win.

Tan and Goh were in excellent form in the opening set with Tan especially looking very sharp.

His front court coverage was superb and the Chinese were unable to cope with his attacking play.

The second set saw the more experienced Fu who had won four world titles in the past starting to stamp his mark and the Chinese were in total control to win the set and force the rubber.

Again, the fourth ranked pair started the third set in convincing style and took the lead until 17-14 before the Malaysian pair found their touch and drew level at 17 all and subsequently took the lead to reach match points before nerves let them down in the final stages .
