Labuan: The emergence of new political parties in the light of the 14th general election (GE14) is not uncommon in the country's political arena, Wanita Umno Chief Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said. However, she said Umno members should not take the matter for granted, but instead should prepare themselves to face any challenges from new opponents.

"The emergence of new parties, despite being led by former Umno leaders, should not be the factor in determining the outcome of the GE14. It is important for all Umno wings to be fully prepared to serve the people at all levels.

"What's important to win the election is to make the people the benchmark of our service or our KPI (key performance indicators). If we achieve our KPI, the people will definitely give a good response to us."

Shahrizat said this to reporters after opening the Labuan Wanita Umno, Youth and Puteri Umno delegates' meetings here, Saturday.

The Wanita Umno chief also called on party members and leadership to prepare themselves with knowledge in facing the challenges from the opposition in the GE14.

"We must have proper planning for the people...our focus should be helping the people," she said.

Shahrizat said Wanita Umno, Youth and Puteri Umno would also continue being the bastions of Umno President Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in facing the challenges.

On the roles of women, Shahrizat said it was equally important that Wanita Umno leaders be given the opportunity to hold important posts, including at division level.

"Beside every successful man, there's a strong supportive woman or wife. So, women should not be sidelined, but instead must be respected for all their sacrifices and dignity," she said.
