400 join Kian Kok music exchange

Kota Kinabalu: About 400 music buffs took part in a music exchange programme at Kian Kok Middle School, here, Saturday.Kian Kok Middle School Board of Directors Chairman Datuk Clement Yeh said the programme benefitted local musicians both culturally and musically through exchanges of ideas among the participants.

Among the prominent participants was the South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band, conducted by Mike Booty, which came all the way from the UK.

"We are indeed privileged today (Saturday) to see 63 members of the South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band performing.

"The band has 120 members aged between eight and 23 and performs in about 30 to 40 concerts annually.

"They have also received silver and gold awards in national music festivals and have twice played for Princess Anne of the British royal family at the Royal Albert Hall in London," he said.

Aside from Kian Kok Middle School, the other local participating schools were SM Pekan II Kota Belud, SMK Labuan, Beaufort Middle School, Sabah Chinese High School, Kota Kinabalu High School, SM Shan Tao and Sabah Tshung Tsin School.

Yeh also said the Kian Kok Middle School band has been very active recently with a visit to Taiwan, a performance at the Jia Yi International Musical Carnival as well as performing in a public concert in July this year, "all of which have provided them fantastic opportunities to grow through experience."

During the programme, a music workshop was conducted in the morning where participants gained more knowledge through interactions and exchange of ideas.

In the afternoon, the participants then performed in a concert where each band performed two to three pieces before they combined and performed together.

An array of songs was performed, including local numbers like 'Sayang Kinabalu' and 'Aku Cinta Padamu', aside from songs from films such as 'The Avengers' and 'The Guardians of the Galaxy'.
