Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman is confident the opening of private hospital, KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital, here would launch Sabah as an international health medical destination. He said the hospital's presence here was in line with the Economic Transformation Programme that was to have medical tourism as one of the economic drivers for the State, as well as the promotion of Sabah as a medical hub in the region.

"I am also confident, the presence of the hospital here is set to change the landscape of health services … and also elevate the quality of treatment," he said.

His speech was read by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin at the official launching of the KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital here on Tuesday, which was officiated by the Head of State Tun Juhar Mahirrudin.

Also present at the event were Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, Resource Development and Information Technology Minister Datuk Siringan Gubat, KPJ Healthcare Bhd President Datuk Amiruddin Abdul Sattar, and others.

For Sabahans, Musa said the private hospital also offered an alternative in terms of treatment apart from public healthcare facilities.

"It is my hope that more private hospitals would be built in Sabah and expanded into main towns so patients no longer need to travel far to receive treatment," he said.

According to him, the hospital being established in Sabah was also in line with the State Government's plan to ensure quality healthcare services are sufficient and accessible to all.

"It is my hope that the hospital will woo more patients and international visitors to the State and intensify the economy of Sabah, while at the same time provide employment opportunities to locals," he said.

Meanwhile, Amiruddin said the opening of the hospital in Kota Kinabalu has positioned KPJ Healthcare to tap the Brunei and Indonesia market in terms of health tourism.

It is KPJ Healthcare Bhd's 22nd hospital in the country.

"It is our hope that the presence of KPJ Sabah will intensify the health medical field of Sabah and countries in the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines region with its good and quality healthcare services," he said.

KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital has 280 beds, and is equipped with seven operating theatres, 13 Intensive Care Unit beds and a trauma and emergency unit.

At the function, Juhar not only officially opened the hospital, but also opened the hospital's luxury presidential suite and took a tour of the oncology ward where he visited a couple of patients.
