Sabah road overtaken by nature
Kota Kinabalu: A two-kilometre access road to Kg Bongkudan and Kg Kaliposuan, in Tamparuli, has been neglected to the extent that it is now virtually non-existent. Most of the stretch is covered with grass.Tamparuli residents approached the Daily Express to highlight the matter.

"The road has not been maintained. The verge is unkempt, with the undergrowth having encroached onto the stretch," said Somili, speaking on behalf of the villagers there.

He said pedestrians, many of whom were school-going children, risked being bitten by snakes or "biawak" (iguanas) while using the stretch. "It is even difficult for those with bigger vehicles to manoeuvre on the road at times because it is so overgrown."

Somili felt it was important for the road to be maintained as many of the rural folk depended on the stretch to transport their produce for sale in the town. He said he had sought the help of a local politician three years ago to find out whether it was possible for the road to be upgraded.

"I made my request in writing but failed to receive a reply to my correspondence.

"In May, I sent a letter to the Sub-district office, calling for the agency to have the stretch maintained."

As of August 24, he said he had yet to receive any response from this authority.

Somili provided a copy of this document which was forwarded to the Sub-district office.

A spokesman for the agency confirmed receipt of his letter, saying that the relevant section would be queried about this matter.

He said the administration of the Sub-district office would have to verify the resident's claims.

"Our officers will have to determine if the road in question is under our maintenance before further action can be taken," he said.

"Should this be the case, we will attend to the damaged section as soon as possible."

He said this matter would be forwarded to the relevant agency if the opposite proves to be true.
