KUANTAN: The durian feast phenomenon has become one of the factors contributing to the high demand for the 'king of fruits' in the market this season.Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) Director General Datuk Ahmad Ishak said most of the demands were from corporate bodies, government departments and agencies, private companies and communities that organised durian eating programmes for their staff, customers and associates.

"Following the encouraging response, Fama targets to increase production from 350,000 metric tons to 400,000 metric tons next year to meet the demand," he told reporters after launching the Kolej Universiti Islam Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah's MyAgrosis Students' Club and My Best Night Market here.

He said the high demand was also being met through the emergence of several durian-based small and medium industries (SMIs) products.

Some hotels also offered durian menu for their guests even though it was one of the fruits strictly forbidden to be brought into hotel rooms or vicinity, he said.

He said the trend was a good phenomenon that could directly promote local fruits and boost the entrepreneurs' income. – Bernama
