Kota Kinabalu: Japanese electronics maker, Sharp, expects income to double in Malaysia, thanks to a deal it signed with Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. in Japan in April. Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. is the world's largest contract manufacturer of electronics products, including for Apple iPhones.

The partnership could see the Japanese company lower its production cost, introduce new products in the market and improve production.

And this could see prices of Sharp products in stores in Malaysia becoming more competitive against other electronic makers, said Sharp-Roxy Sales and Service Company (M) Sdn Bhd Sabah Manager, Bok Chek Siang on Thursday.

The marketing arm of Sharp Group in Malaysia, is upbeat over the development and believes the alliance between both companies could see the developer of the world's first air purifier with a mosquito catcher doubling its profit in Malaysia by 2017, as well as in Sabah.

Sharp is registering a turnover of RM5 million, with RM4 million alone coming from the consumer electrical segment each month in the State, said Bok.

"The deal could indirectly see Sharp touch market segments they have not entered before, as well as develop more products to cover more consumer segments," he told reporters here.

But he believes business will remain steady in Sabah in 2016 until production begins to pick up in Japan.

Bok said this during the launching of the Sharp Merdeka Roadshow at a mall here on Thursday, where one lucky customer stands a chance to be an instant millionaire.

The Hon Hai-Sharp alliance sees the Taiwanese firm injecting a capital investment of ¥389 billion (approximately RM15.5 billion) into Sharp.

Earlier, Bok pointed out Sharp has expanded rapidly over the last 10 years, from generating a RM1 million turnover a month, to RM5 million a month at present.

On the Sharp Merdeka Roadshow, Sharp-Roxy Sales and Service Advertising and Public Relations Manager Burhanuddin Kahar said this is the second time the Sharp Merdeka Roadshow is being held in Kota Kinabalu.

The event is jointly organised with dealer Hyperactive Electrical Sdn Bhd.

Consumers will have the chance to participate in the 'Be a Sharp Millionaire' contest, where winners stand to win a Nissan Almera or the grand prize of RM1 million when they buy Sharp products worth a minimum of RM500.

The contest ends Aug 31, 2016.
