Kuala Lumpur: The three Tan Sris who have been named by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad should lodge a police report and pursue legal action to clear their names, New Straits Times reports.Terengganu Umno Youth chief Mohd Johari Abu Bakar said if it was untrue that the trio — former Bank Negara Malaysia governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz, former attorney-general Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail and Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission chief commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed — were involved in any conspiracy to topple Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, they should step forward and sue Dr Mahathir.

"If it is slander, I urge the trio to sue Dr Mahathir and Sarawak Report. The people want to know the truth and the three of them must come forward to clear their names. They should not keep quiet; this is a matter of their dignity and honour," he said.

Last month, Umno Youth vice chief Khairul Azwan Harun had alleged that Zeti, Gani and Abu Kassim were in cahoots with Dr Mahathir to bring down Najib.

At a press conference on Sunday, Dr Mahathir claimed that the three prominent figures who were part of a task force entrusted to carry out an investigation on the prime minister had been betrayed by one of their own.

His comments came on the heels of allegations that he had been conspiring with the three to oust Najib from office, which he has denied.

Umno Youth executive council member Shahril Hamdan, meanwhile, said Dr Mahathir's statement implied that there was indeed a conspiracy to co-opt foreign powers to topple Najib.

"This is the only logical conclusion. How can there be a betrayal by anyone if there wasn't an unholy pact to begin with?

'The people will be able to judge this for themselves, but in my mind this is also a vindication of Khairul's actions (of lodging a police report) a few weeks back."

Wanita Umno Information chief Datuk Rosni Zahari said the trio named by Dr Mahathir must step forward to clear their names as the allegation was a serious one.

She said if the allegation that they were involved in a plot to topple the prime minister was true it would be tantamount to betraying the democratic practices of the country.

"This is not an allegation which should be taken lightly as those trying to topple a democratically elected government (can) face stiff punishment.

"Therefore, if the allegation is not true, I urge the three individuals who were named by Dr Mahathir to step forward and make a statutory declaration to deny it.

"They must also initiate legal action against Dr Mahathir for tarnishing their reputation and also smearing their unblemished record by linking them to a serious allegation," she said, adding that remaining silent was no longer an option for Zeti, Gani and Abu Kassim after what Dr Mahathir had said.

In a related development, Dr Mahathir said there were actually four individuals with the title "Tan Sri" who were part of the task force entrusted to carry out investigations on the prime minister, and one of them could have betrayed the rest.

"It is probable that the one (who was not included among the three) who betrayed," he said in Putrajaya.

Asked if he was referring to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, Dr Mahathir replied: "I don't know.

I don't want to be arrested."
