GEORGE TOWN: A controversial rapper who produced a video clip at a mosque in Tanjung Bungah, Penang, which allegedly insulted Islam, was released on police bail after his four-day remand ended Thursday.Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the 33-year-old singer was released pending further instructions from the Attorney-General's Chambers.

Earlier, the singer's lawyer T. Tharuma had told reporters that Lower Courts (Criminal) Assistant Registrar Ahmad Tajudin Zaini had rejected the police's request to extend the remand period on his client.

Tharuma said he had asked the court to acquit his client.

The rapper, who is also a local film director, arrived at the Remand Section at 11:34am, and left about 30 minutes later.

The man was then taken to the Northeast District Police Headquarters in Jalan Patani near here.

On Monday, the singer was remanded for four days to facilitate investigations into the publication of the video clip, and he was investigated under Section 295 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to two years, or a fine, or both, if convicted.

The singer was arrested at 3.30pm last Sunday at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) after arriving from abroad.

The four-minute video clip with four men rapping in Mandarin went viral, and caused a public outcry, as it was believed to have insulted Islam.

Subsequently, various parties, including non-governmental organisations lodged police reports against the video clip.-Bernama
