Kota Kinabalu: Golfers can treat themselves with fresh seafood, make a visit to popular tourist spots and conquer a "reasonably friendly" course as Sandakan Golf & Country Club will host this year's TYT's Birthday Inter-Club Golf Championship. It has been a number of years since the golf club, which is one of the oldest in Sabah, hosted the event during which time a lot has changed in the district. But what has never changed is the passion for the sport through which the club boasts to have made so many lasting friendships among local and visiting golfers.

"We've seen so many friendships among golfers that started at this club," said club captain Roger Goh.

And more good golfing ties will be built when 17 clubs in the State including the Federal Territory of Labuan which are affiliated to the Sabah Golf Association will be sending their team for the annual event to be held on September 17 and 18.

Although more a fellowship event than actually a real competition, organisers still expect clubs to be sending their best golfers to conquer the 18-hole course which Goh has hinted will not be made tough so long they keep their approach shots accurate.

"We'll be reasonably friendly when placing the pins. But they'll have to know where to land the ball on the greens.

If not it will be difficult to attack the hole," he tipped during a press conference, Friday. He also assured that the Sandakan Golf & Country Club is not a blind course. But on the other hand, he would not promise an easy chance to make birdies on the two days as by the very nature of the sport, there are countless of factors that determine the score.

Each team will be sending one gross team and a nett team each with four players. Score will count on the best three nett and gross.

Meanwhile, Sabah Golf Association (SGA) president Datuk George Bandusena said the purpose of the event is to bring all the teams and officials from the 17 clubs together for networking and forming friendship.

"This is the only time of the year where we can see golfers from all the clubs together," he said.

He also said that it will be an event to discover new talents for selection into the SGA Cup team and State team.

The second day of the championship will see invitees including the Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin and State ministers, government officials, special guests and members of the press teeing off. Borneo Golf Resort was the gross team winner last year at Sabah Golf & Country Club.

Bandusena said the championship is held on rotation basis among the clubs every year and this year's venue was personally selected by the Head of State.

While thanking Sandakan Golf & Country Club for being the host this year, he also urged golfers to take the opportunity to do some touristy activities while in the district which is known for its fresh seafood and nature tourism.
