No reports of damage to Kinabalu Park
Kota Kinabalu: Despite the fact that tremors were felt in the Mount Kinabalu area following the earthquake Friday morning, there has been no reports of damage, said Sabah Parks (TTS) Director Dr Jamili Nais. He said the rangers who were sent to survey the area also found it in good condition.Dr Jamili said when the quake occurred, he and several TTS staff were at a site meeting in an open area near the construction site of the operations office and hostel at Panar Laban, at a height of 3,500 metres.

"Someone asked "what is this, is it rain?' when they heard the rumbling of stone on the mountain, like the sound of rain.

I told them it was a quake," Dr Jamili said.

He said he then told all the construction workers to immediately descend from the structure.

He said during the quake which lasted between two to three seconds, there was some panic among the climbers who were sitting in a restaurant in Panar Laban after they arrived from the peak of Mount Kinabalu.

However, they were calmed down before they were told to descend the mountain.

"I was also informed that there were five new groups which had just started the climb about one kilometre from Timpohon (the starting point of the climb) who turned back because of the quake," he said.

Jamili added that there were also porters who turned back and left their baggage with the mountain guides as they dared not continue the climb.
