312ha degraded mangrove forest restored

Sandakan: A total of 312 hectares of degraded mangrove forest have been successfully restored in Sabah till August this year.The success has been made possible through the Sabah Forestry Department-International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems (FSD-ISME) collaboration project that started in 2011.It has also until now expanded its mangrove rehabilitation programme involving 20 sites throughout the State, the department said in a statement.ADVERTISEMENT The planting sites are within eight Forestry Districts, namely Sandakan, Beluran, Kalabakan/Tawau, Kunak, Beaufort, Pitas, Kudat and Lahad Datu.This was disclosed during the 12th Project Steering Committee meeting held at the department headquarters, here, Thursday.The department said in a statement that the project is now in its second phase where it has received RM1.5 million from the project since 2011, including donations from university students from Tokyo to rehabilitate and restore degraded mangroves in Sabah.Under the collaboration, the department receives RM5.5 million yen annually from Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co Ltd, Japan which is equivalent to about RM200,000.ADVERTISEMENT At the meeting, the department again received donations from five university students amounting to RM3,000 for the project. The students were from different universities in Tokyo. Four teachers from the same city have volunteered to plant mangroves in a degraded mangrove reserve in Kunak.

Meanwhile, FSD Director Datuk Sam Mannan (pic) said he was pleased with the progress of the collaboration.
