10 years for robbing cabby of car, RM2,600

Kota Kinabalu: A 21-year-old fishmonger who robbed a taxi driver was sentenced to 10 years' jail by the Sessions Court on Friday.Remmy Martin pleaded guilty before Judge Azreena Aziz to robbing one Jumalin Laja of his car and RM2,600, at 12.40am on Nov 8, 2014 at the Borneo Copacabana Café & Catering in Cyber Square, Tanjung Aru.He committed the offence together with two accused who were found guilty of a similar charge and sentenced to 10 years' jail each.

The offence under Section 395 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping, on conviction.Counsel P.J Perira who represented Remmy, asked for a lenient sentence saying that Remmy had regretted his mistake and that it was his first offence.Perira added that during the incident Remmy did not use any weapon and the victim did not suffer any injury. However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Husna Abdul Halim urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence on the grounds that such offence were serious and rampant.

Husna said even though Remmy did not bring any weapon he was the one who took the car key and drove it away from the scene.She also submitted that the taxi was recovered but not the money.

The court heard that while Jumalin was in his vehicle waiting for his friend a woman approached and asked him to send her somewhere.After arriving at the said place, the woman identified as Siti refused to get out of the car and after a while two men, Remmy and Eshyam suddenly appeared.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
