Penampang: The United Pasok Momogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) has its roots in Penampang and it is only right that the people in the district is represented by Upko.Speaking during the reorganisation of Upko Kg Limbanak here, Saturday, Upko Acting President Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau said the party had always been synonymous with Penampang as it was in this district that the party first took shape.

"It was a sad day when we lost both seats in the previous election. But it only means that we should work harder so that in the next election, we can reconquer Penampang," he said.

Tangau, who is also Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, said politics had always been about leadership and admitted that the party had a period where it was lacking quality leaders in its ranks.

Nevertheless, he said, nowadays it is increasingly obvious that more and more young people are showing interests in taking up the mantle as the party's old guards are getting ready to pass the baton.

Tangau is also pleased by the growing interest of Sabahans in Upko as shown by the number of new members, mostly young people, in the past few years.

"When I asked them why they wanted to join Upko, they said firstly, because it is a local party.

Secondly, they like the party's leadership, its programmes and struggle and they want to help contribute as best they could," he said.

A total of 300 people comprising mostly young professionals handed over their membership applications to join the party during the event.

They were led by Ceasar Mandela Malakun, who also now heads Upko Limbanak branch.

Tangau congratulated Mandela for taking the lead to reorganise Upko Limbanak and hoped their entry into the party's fold would further strengthen the party in Penampang.

Also present were former State Attorney-General Tan Sri Herman Luping and Penampang Upko Chief Datuk Donald Mojuntin.
