Kuala Lumpur: National Sports Institute (NSI) chief executive officer, Dr Khairi Zawi believes the Malaysian contingent is ready to win the gold medal in the Paralympic Games from Sept 7-18 in Rio de Janeiro."The paralympic athletes are in high spirit and have no fear. Most of the athletes are ranked among the world's best with some almost equalling the record set by normal athletes," he said, here, Tuesday.

Malaysia's hope of winning medals are not only limited to Mohamad Ridzuan Mohamad Puzi (sprint) and Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli (shot put).

Khairi said Abdul Latif Romly (long jump) has shot to prominent after winning the gold medal in the IPC World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

"Abdul Latif has a personal record of 7:46 metres, not far from the 8 metres set by normal athletes in Rio.

"If he is consistent, Abdul Latif will return with the gold medal."

A total of 21 athletes will compete in eight sports, namely athletics, cycling, powerlifting, archery, ping pong, sailing, wheelchair tennis and swimming. – Bernama
