Merdeka parade draws big crowd
Kota Kinabalu: About 5,000 people thronged Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen here Wednesday to watch the march-past of 174 contingents, the highlight of this year's State-level National Day celebration. The huge turnout proved the people were eager to come together with other proud Malaysians to celebrate the patriotic occasion.

The contingent parade began at 8am led by Jalur Gemilang and Sabah flag bearers from the Army and the Navy, respectively, and made its way to Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen as marchers gave salute to the Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin and other State leaders, as the police brass band urged them on with the usual selections of marching scores.

The entertainment was led by choir group of Kota Kinabalu City Hall who led the singing of the national anthem and Sabah anthem, the reading of the Rukunegara and singing of this year's National Day theme song, Sehati Sejiwa.

The special poem for this year's event was later recited before the guests of honours left at around 9.45am.

The Water Department contingent, which made a comeback this year after a year's hiatus, immediately reclaimed its throne from last year's winners, Public Works Department (PWD). This was their 19th title.

Housing and Rural Development Authority (LPPB) also leapfrogged PWD to claim the second spot in the non-uniformed public sector category. The PWD had to settle for third.

SMK Badin PKBM Darat contingent won the secondary school title while the school's Bomba Cadet took second place.

SMK Putatan Police Cadet grabbed the third.

SK Seri Gaya again emerged winners in the primary school category, followed by SK St. Francis Convent and SK Sacred Heart.

In the higher institute of learning category, UiTM Ksatria Commando took the crown while Kota Kinabalu Polytechnic Wataniah and Kimanis Petroleum Institute took second and third place, respectively.

Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB), meanwhile, claimed the private sector title, while Sabah Foundation Group and Sedco Group had to settle for first and second runner-up places.

Information Department 1Malaysia Club came in first in the NGO category, while Tuaran Red Crescent came in second and Kota Kinabalu Pandu Puteri in third.

Kota Kinabalu City Hall won the uniformed public sector category, followed by Sandakan Municipal Council and Customs Department.
