PhD USM students get sponsorship from Czech Republic

GEORGE TOWN: Two PhD students from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) have been awarded scholarship worth RM1,500 per month (CZK 8,800) from the Czech Republic to attend six months research attachment at University of Pardubice. USM Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Omar Osman said the research collaboration between USM and University of Pardubice is the first of its kind for a Malaysian university as well as for a Czech Republic University. "Two PhD students from USM have been identified and are due to attend six months research attachment at University of Pardubice, one departing in Mid-September this year until early January 2017, and another one beginning January to June next year," he said at the presentation of the scholarship by Ambassador of the Czech Republic Rudolf Hykl, here Thursday.

Omar said the collaboration started when a team of rectors from the Czech Republic visited a few universities in Malaysia including USM in May, 2015. "USM is honoured with this achievement, it shows a relationship between the two countries in education can be explored," he said.Hykl said the collaboration will contribute toward development of relationship between the Czech Republic and Universiti Sains Malaysia. "I hope the two selected students have an enjoyable stay in the Czech Republic and gain the necessary educational experience to inspire future projects," he said.

Meanwhile the selected students, Ng Siow Woon, 28, expressed her happiness when told of the opportunity to do internship and was excited for being able to do research in the Czech Republic and collaborate with other universities. Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
