Kota Kinabalu: POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd Chief Executive Officer Dr Pang Teck Wai said the POIC Lahad Datu is in need of manpower, especially in electrical engineering as electrical technicians. The industry has a big power line of 132 KV as well as needs locals to fill a range of jobs in management, accounting and civil engineering.

"Presently, we have about 1,500 workers in POIC Lahad Datu and over 90 per cent are locals and there are about 1,000 vacancies yearly, including for professionals, technical and engineers that are needed for the industry there," he said.

"However, we have not able to get enough workers in particular skilled workers and engineers … we are facing difficulties getting engineers and good managers, accountants and lawyers to work there.

"The main reason is because many of them want to work in cities and main townships.

"That is why we need workers with willingness and the right perspective as the industry is growing in places like in Lahad Datu and Sipitang, and not in city areas," he said, adding that industries are being developed near the source of natural resources.

To a question, he said POIC Lahad Datu has 25 factories and the biggest industry player is Genting which produces bio chemicals for high performance lubricants using palm oil.

Pang was speaking to Polytechnic Kota Kinabalu students in Sepanggar on career opportunities in conjunction with the two-day Career Carnival of the Technical, Vocational, Education and Training (TVET) Sabah 2016 programme.

It is jointly organised by Polytechnic Education Department, Community College Education Department, Vocational and Technical Education Division, Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (Sedia) and other TVET institutions.
