Kuala Lumpur: Eleven of the 13 private traditional Chinese medical schools in Malaysia have closed down or are in the process of closing, says Federation of Chinese Physicians and Medicine Dealers Associations of Malaysia (FCPMDAM) Secretary-General Kerk Ee Chan."Some of the 11 schools are conducting four or five-year traditional Chinese medicine undergraduate courses and will close once the last batch of students graduate," he said.Kerk said some of them had to close due to the restrictions of the Traditional and Complementary Medicine (TCM) Act 2013, which was enforced last year, while a few were forced to shut as their courses were not approved by the Higher Education Ministry. The rest, he said, were unable to carry on due to other factors, Oriental Daily News reported.

In his speech, FCPMDAM president Tan Kai Hee described the situation facing the traditional Chinese medical fraternity as a crisis as most of the schools were forced to close in the absence of approvals to conduct their courses following the enforcement of the TCM Act.He said although a few universities in the country conduct TCM courses, they were conducted in Bahasa Malaysia or English.
