Parti Pribumi approved in principle, says Zahid

Putra Jaya: The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has principally approved the registration of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM), a new political party led by former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the RoS however needs to clarify several matters with the party before full approval could be granted.He said this was in regards to the role of the party's president and chairman.ADVERTISEMENT Ahmad Zahid added that the party, formed by several ex-Umno leaders and critics of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, were also barred from promoting it as "Bersatu", and should instead use the PPBM acronym."The registration of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia has been approved today without any amendments to the name."They are not allowed to use other names (as acronym) as they had applied as such, and not as Bersatu," he said in a press conference."In the initial application, the party had wanted to use the acronym Bersatu but a ROS check revealed that the word was being used by many other parties and organisations. ADVERTISEMENT "Following discussions, the applicant gave the acronym PPBM and ROS gave the approval (in principle)," he said, adding that Bersatu was being used by six parties and organisations. Disgruntled political leaders including former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and former Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir are part of the new party, formed as a platfom to go against the Najib-led government in the next general election.

RoS Director-General Datuk Mohammad Razin Abdullah, who was present stated that the party could face deregistration as accorded in the the Societies Act 1966 if it insists on promoting PPBM as Bersatu. He added that official approval would be issued as soon as PPBM provided the necessary clarification to the department.
