13 killed in separate mishaps in peninsula and Kuching

Kuala Lumpur: A total of 13 people were killed in separate accidents in the Peninsula and Kuching, Sarawak, the past 48 hours.In the first accident at Sungai Petani, five people were killed in an accident Friday night involving a taxi and two cars at Jalan Alor Setar-Sungai Petani, near Batu 16, Padang Lumut.

Tai Cheng Kee@ Teh Suan Kee, 69, and Ooi Lian Choo, 76, the wife and sister respectively, of the taxi driver who died at the scene in the 9pm incident, was pronounced dead at Yan Hospital about 11pm and 3am Saturday.

The taxi driver, Ooi Guan Seng, 72, the driver of the Iswara, Ahmad Arif Othman, 27, and a passenger in the car, Mohamad Azzmi Azizan, 32, died at the scene.

Yan district police chief, DSP Muhamad Halim Yatim said the accident was believed to have happened when a Proton Iswara carrying three men entered the opposite lane on the way to Sungai Petani.

He said the car then collided with a Nissan Sentra taxi carrying a family of three.

"The impact caused the taxi to spin and be hit by another car, a Proton Persona," he said in a statement here, Saturday.

Another victim Hajir Ibrahim, 53, who was in the backseat of the Iswara, was injured and the victim was sent to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar. The Persona driver, a man aged 29, escaped unhurt.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) Road Transport Act 1987.

In IPOH, a four-vehicle accident along Ipoh-Lumut highway near Puncak Jelapang Maju Friday night claimed three lives.

Two of the dead were R. Mathusuthanan and Venoshen Ng, both aged 17 years, who died at the scene, while the third victim who has yet to be identified, died at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital.

Ipoh Fire and Rescue operations chief Mohd Fauzi Abdul Aziz said the incident happened around 8pm when the Toyota Corolla in which Mathusuthanan and Venoshen were travelling in from Ipoh to Lumut collided with a Perodua Viva on the opposite lane.

"A Toyota Vios then hit the rear of the Viva while a lorry which tried to avoid the Vios, skidded towards the road shoulder.

"The driver of the Viva was seriously injured and rushed to the hospital but passed away soon after," he said.

Meanwhile, the driver of the lorry, Musa Zulkafli, 56, and the male driver of the Vios escaped unhurt.

In SEREMBAN, two motorists died in a collision involving a trailer and a four-wheel-drive at Kilometre 2, Jalan Kampung Batu-Kampung Miku, Rembau, Friday night.

In the incident around 11pm, Kamarulfaiz Abd Razak, 35, who was driving the trailer and Ng Choon Poh, 55, the driver of the 4WD, died at the scene due to severe injuries It is learned that the trailer was on its way from Kampung Miku to Kampung Batu when it collided with a Toyota Hilux from the opposite direction.

As a result, the two victims were pinned to their seats. Negeri Sembilan traffic staff officer ASP Mohd Hafidzal Zainal Abidin when contacted confirmed the case, which is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The bodies were sent to Tampin Hospital.

In KEMAMAN, a trainee teacher was killed and two others seriously injured when they car they were travelling in skidded and crashed into the road divider at Km265 of the East Coast Highway 2 (LPT2) here Saturday.

In the 3.40pm incident, Nik Haikal Amir Hassan, 20, died at the scene, while his two friends, Muhammad Amin Ahmad Saifuddin and Mohd Bashsyir Bukhari, both aged 20, sustained severe injuries.

Kemaman deputy police chief DSP Normansah Din, when contacted by Bernama said, the three students of the Institute of Teacher Education at Tun Hussein Onn campus in Batu Pahat, Johor, were heading back to their hometown in Kelantan.

He said the mishap occurred when the Perodua Kenari car driven by Nik Haikal was believed to have skidded and rammed into the highway divider. The impact caused Nik Haikal to be thrown out of the vehicle and landed on the middle of the highway.

Normansah said passers-by helped the two other victims who were trapped inside the car.

Nik Haikal's body was sent to Kemaman Hospital for post mortem, while Muhammad Amin and Mohd Bashsyir were also sent to the same hospital for treatment.

In KUCHING, a married couple was killed, four people were seriously injured and a child was slightly hurt in a road accident at Bukit Bangunan, Km42, Jalan Serian-Sri Aman near here, Saturday. Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Farhan Sufyan said the 8.30am accident involved a Proton Saga heading for Serian from Sri Aman and a Perodua Kancil heading in the opposite direction.

He said the Sri Aman Fire and Rescue Station received an emergency call at 8.38am and quickly directed its team to the scene.

"Two people who were pinned in the Perodua Kancil, driver Jembu Anak Pritain Ungat, 52, his wife and front passenger, Uja Anak Nyaoh, 49, were confirmed dead by the medical team which rushed to the spot," he said.

A third occupant of the car, who sat at the back, Thellphiner Dueh Anak Jembu, 16, was seriously hurt.

According to Farhan, three victims in the Proton Saga, who were also seriously hurt, were driver Zulfiandi Kennedy Abdullah, 36, his wife Siti Haziah Baha, 31, and their daughter Nur Fatih Bahirah Zulfiandi, 12.

Their youngest child, Nurdiana Zulfiandi, five, was only slightly hurt.

He said the firemen had to use hydraulic rescue tools to remove the two bodies. -Bernama
