Beaufort: The contractor responsible for the construction of the Jempangah water treatment plant has been urged to complete the project on time to overcome the perennial water problem in the district.Beaufort MP Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun said any problem regarding the RM226 million project should be resolved quickly so that it could be completed by December as the plant was expected to start operating by January next year.

"We don't want to see anymore problems like land claim issues which arose previously as it will delay its completion … but the District Officer managed to settle the problem.

"The contractor has given his guarantee that the project can be completed on time as it is now 95 per cent complete," she said after visiting the project site, here, on Saturday.

Azizah who is also Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister said, once completed, the plant built on a four-hectare land can resolve the water shortages faced by residents in the surrounding districts.

According to her, the plant will be able to supply up to 40 million litres of water per day and this will benefit more than 85,000 people in Beaufort, Kuala Penyu and Menumbok.

"The plant will increase the treated water distribution to 95 per cent compared to 85 per cent currently and able to cater to the needs of consumers until 2030."

Meanwhile, Azizah welcomed the government's effort on upgrading the water plant in Kampung Limbawang, here, where works are expected to be completed by the middle of next year.

She said RM5 million was allocated for the upgrade and once completed, it can supply up to 18 million litres of water per day compared to 15 million litres previously.
