Tony needs to understand FAM constitution first: Khairy

SIK: Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin advised Air Asia chief executive officer, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes who offered to serve as president of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to first understand the FAM constitution. He said as a sports association, the national football governing body had its own constitution and did not need his consent as youth and sports minister. "It (FAM president election) is up to FAM affiliate members and its constitution has clearly stated the election process. ADVERTISEMENT "If one wants to be FAM president, my first advice is to understand the constitution. "The minister cannot determine as FAM posts are elected democratically," he said. He was speaking to reporters after opening the Sik Umno division delegates' meeting here Saturday. He was commenting on media reports which stated the readiness of Fernandes who is also the owner of English football club Queens Park Rangers (QPR) to lead FAM if given the chance. In his statement, Fernandes was quoted as asking the media to enquire from Khairy as Youth and Sports Minister if he wanted him to be FAM president. ADVERTISEMENT In another development, Khairy said three event finals tomorrow namely shot put, long jump and men's 100 metres could yield medals for the national contingent in the Rio Paralympic Games in Brazil. The three paralympic athletes taking the challenge tomorrow morning are Ziyad Zulkifli (F20 shot put), Mohd Ridzuan Mohd Puzi (T36 men's 100m) and Abdul Latif Romli in the T20 long jump.
