Kuala Lumpur: Parti Peribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin says he will work hand in hand with the Opposition to free jailed ex-Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim from prison. The former Umno deputy president, as quoted in an online news portal, said certain members of the public had asked him to help release Anwar. Muhyiddin said he would work towards achieving this if given the green light by supporters.

"We need radical reforms on the electoral system in order to set all Malaysians free. Only if there is a change in leadership, we will be able to determine the fate of Anwar.

"We must not expect (Prime Minister Datuk Seri) Najib to free Anwar," Muhyiddin said. Muhyiddin, expressing his sympathy for Anwar's incarceration, said he was "deeply saddened by his (Anwar's) life in prison".

"If we can agree that setting Anwar free is an important goal, then we can come together to reach a consensus on this matter when we form a new government," he remarked.

Opposition parties, Muhyiddin said, should unite and support the newly-formed political party led by him, chaired by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Meanwhile, a United State-based lawyer is seeking an explanation from the Home Ministry as to why she was denied access to her client, Anwar, at the Sungai Buloh prison. Kimberley Motley said she was appointed by Anwar last Wednesday and had planned to meet her client Tuesday morning.

However, she and another lawyer, ‎Raul Lee Bhaskaran said they were not allowed to meet with the former Opposition leader when they went to the prison. The two lawyers then drove from Sungai Buloh to the Home Ministry here to demand an explanation but was denied entry again.

"I have travelled thousands of miles just to see my client and being denied access is another travesty of justice," she told reporters.

"This is not a legal case but a political one and I will be representing him as part of his team of lawyers," she said, adding that an application to represent Anwar in court had been submitted recently. Motley, a graduate from Marquette Law School in 2003, said she will be handling Anwar's case on a pro-bono basis.

The former Mrs Wisconsin has practised in the US and Afghanistan and completed extensive research work in the area of juvenile justice that has been reported internationally. Anwar is currently serving a five-year sentence at the Sungai Buloh Prison for sodomising his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, in 2008.
