Penampang: Road users have been told to exercise caution when using the road adjacent to Taman Mont Tiara due to eroding soil on the slope. Kepayan Task Force chairman Kenny Chua believed the road if not repaired could cause power disruption and loss of land communication lines.

He said this will affect the heavily populated Taman Suria, Taman Penampang and Kampung Peluduk residents should the poles collapse altogether one day.

"From my observation there is potential danger which will have serious impacts as the road is a preferred route used by many road users, especially from the housing areas.

"The Penampang District Council (PDC) and Public Works Department (PWD) must immediately take necessary action.

"The current monsoon season may worsen the situation if the authorities still prefer temporary measures to control the damage as they previously did," said Chua, adding that a permanent solution must be found to the problem immediately.

"Signs of soil deterioration is so obvious and apparent. The rains will make it worse and damage the 85 degree slope," he added.

Chua who is also Penampang Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy chief said that one of the Telekom poles has bent downwards only to be supported by an electrical cable.

"Road users may not notice the danger at a glance and they will only realise the danger at close range despite the more than 20 meter-long signs of previous cracks caused by the depression on the surface of the road from Bundusan Road to Donggongon.

"The cracks were re-asphalted to cover the road surface only. The inner side of the soil is still deteriorating and that in the long run would crack, collapse and cause massive depression and damage. I am not an engineer but any lay person would agree with me that the site is like a time bomb waiting to explode."

"Appropriate and immediate measures must be taken by the relevant authorities. A retaining wall may also help as a permanent solution. And with that, the authorities in meantime, should divert any heavy vehicles from using that route as it may further deteriorate the already dangerous situation," he said.

Chua said he did not wish to see another canvas placed on the slope to cover the erosion, saying that is only a temporary initiative and does not solve the problem.
