Beaufort: Sabah opposition chief Datuk Lajim Ukin said Sabahans more than ever now need to reflect on some of the final advice by Sabah's co-founding father, the late Tun Datu Mustapha Datu Harun."The late Mustapha had said it will be meaningless for Sabah if they have a government but let others or outsiders control the state and Sabahans.

"Tun's words still ring loud in our ears today as we chart the future of our state and people," Lajim said, when officiating Parti Keadilan Rakyat's Beaufort division's annual general meeting, Friday.

Lajim, who is also Sabah Keadilan head, said he felt it is his responsibility to remind and empower Sabahans to take back whatever is theirs as laid out prior to the formation of the Federation of Malaysia in 1963.

"On the occasion of our meeting today and in conjunction with Malaysia Day, I have one request and that is to take heed of the advice by Mustapha," he said.

"In four years time in line with Vision 2020, our nation is supposed to be a developed country with high income society but where do we stand now? Sabah is rich but yet we have to beg. Until when do we beg?

"I am not against progress in the peninsula. We can share our wealth with them, but let there be balance and focus on Sabah," he said, adding that Sarawak is doing the right thing to reclaim its autonomous power.

Lajim also said that political leaders in Sabah need to unite to help change the regime at the centre in Putrajaya.

"But we in Keadilan Sabah also want to be a major contributor of the movement to install a new government.

However, we are not to be taken for granted as mere followers.

"For this we must build and have our own house and we must hold the keys to the house, for we may get kicked out from the house if it is not our own," he said, explaining that was what happened to several senior leaders of Umno recently.

Lajim later in the evening hosted a Malaysia Day celebration at a big open air hall in the compound of his residence in Kg Koundo Kebatu, near here.
