PAS spiritual head Haron dies in Frisco hospital

Kuala Lumpur: After suffering from heart complications for some time, PAS spiritual leader Datuk Dr Haron Din breathed his last at 10.10 am (Malaysian time) Friday at Stanford University Hospital, San Francisco. Haron, 76, also an eminent Islamic scholar and a pioneer in Islamic medicine in Malaysia, passed away in the presence of his close family members.

He was undergoing treatment for his critical condition at the hospital's Intensive Care Unit.

He leaves his wife Datin Khatijah Din, two sons and three daughters.

Born on Aug 18, 1940 in Bohor Mali, Kangar, Perlis, Haron was the third child among 10 siblings.

Haron became PAS spiritual leader in March, 2015 following the death of his predecessor Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat in February that year from prostate cancer.

He began his active involvement in the Islamic party in 1974 at the age of 34 before being appointed as a member of the PAS Central Working Committee (1975-1983).

He had also once been the party's information chief, a member of its Ulama Syura Council and deputy spiritual leader.

The late Haron had his early education at Madrasah al-Islahiah al-Wataniah in Bohor Mali, Madrasah al-'Alawiyah al-Diniah, Al-Kuliah al-Islamiah and Kolej Islam Klang, Selangor.

He furthered his studies at Cairo University in Egypt for the Diploma in Education and later pursued a doctorate in Syariah at Dar al-Ulum University, Cairo.

Although active in politics, he was a member of the Syariah Advisory Council of a number of banking institutions including Bank Negara Malaysia, CIMB and Muamalah Financial Consulting.

Haron was also the founder of the association, Persatuan Kebajikan dan Pengubatan Islam Malaysia, running the Darussyifa' Islamic alternative medicine clinic, which is especially well known among the residents of Bangi and surrounding areas.

Darussyifa', which was officially established on April 17, 1988, now has more than five branches in the Klang Valley and Negeri Sembilan. Harun was also active in giving religious talks and lectures at mosques and other venues.

In 2010, he was the recipient of the Selangor Tokoh Maal Hijrah 1432 Award, as part of the state's celebration of the beginning of the Islamic New Year.

The late Haron had written several academic books on Islam with titles such as 'Manusia dan Islam' (Mankind and Islam), 'Falsafah Pendidikan Islam' (Philosophy of Islamic Education), 'Obor Islam' (The Light of Islam), 'Tasawur Islam' (Islamic Concepts) and 'Hudud dalam Perudangan Islam' (Hudud in Islamic Law) .- Bernama
