Kota Kinabalu: Judicial officials from the East Coast as well as Native Court officials and lawyers benefitted from a Native Court Workshop by the Sabah Sarawak Court Working Group led by Chief Justice of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Richard Malanjun. Among topics discussed at the session on Monday were Native Courts Enactments: An Overview and Revision, Native Customary Rights, Roles of the Assessors, Recording of Evidence and Notes of proceedings in the Native Court, Judgement Writing for Native Court Cases, Native Certificates and Native Estates, and Native Laws on Marriage, Divorce and Property Distribution.Besides Malanjun, other presenters were Jupirin Wong Andamal of State Attorney General Office, Datuk Kong Hong Ming an advocate, Datuk Douglas Primus Sikayun Judge of Kota Kinabalu High Court, William Sampil former Penampang District Officer, Datuk Martin Idang Judicial Commissioner of Sandakan High Court and Emmie Idang an advocate.ADVERTISEMENT Group discussion with the native lawyers was also held discussing in depth on the current position of the native court, native laws and way forward.According to Malanjun, the workshop is necessary in order to update and to refresh knowledge about native laws among those involved in the judiciary such as Magistrates, Registrars, High Court and Session Court Judges, village chiefs, WKAN, among others."We are educating and imparting knowledge especially to the young lawyers on the preparation of recording judgment, case notes and so on. It is also refreshment and updating courses for those involved in the legal matters. "This way we are able to provide better services to the community when we are equipped with all the necessary knowledge and information. More than 100 participated in the workshop which was conducted in a camp site in Mondikot Deer Farm in Mondikot, Kaiduan, Papar.Those from outstations were four judicial officials from Sandakan, three from Tawau and one from Lahad Datu and the rest were from Penampang, Putatan, Kota Kinabalu and Papar districts. Also present were a few high court judges from Sarawak and one of them was Datuk Yew Jen Kie.
