Langkawi: Tour packages to Langkawi created by travel agents in Guangzhou are receiving overwhelming response with advanced bookings to visit the island made as far as for May next year.Cody Qudi of GZL International Travel Services Ltd, a leading travel agent in southern China's largest city, said bookings had increased after the introduction of a direct flight service provided by AirAsia last January.

He said the flight frequencies which had been increased to four times a week now had further expanded the opportunity for more tourists from Guangzhou to go to Langkawi.

"For the last two months alone, we had arranged for over 800 travellers from Guangzhou to tour Langkawi and there will still be some more coming in," he said when met at a reception organised by Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) here.

According to him, Chinese tourists, particularly from the country's southern part, were seeing Langkawi as their destination of choice to escape from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan life.

Cody was among a 16-member delegation of travel agents and magazine writers from Guangzhou who are here since last Monday on a familiarisation trip arranged by Tourism Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Century Holidays International Travel Group's Guangzhou general manager, Creamy Chan said more hotel rooms were needed in Langkawi in order to cope with the increasing demand for tourists from China.

She said there had been a number of occasions where the country's tourists had to defer their trips due to the unavailability of rooms particularly during the peak season.

Tourism Malaysia's Guangzhou Marketing Manager, Tracy Li, said tourists from this capital city of Guangdong province would contribute substantially to Malaysia's target arrival of four million from China by 2018.

She said for these tourists, Langkawi was a luxury destination which offered reasonably priced five-star accommodations, palatable choice of food and beverages as well as great tourism entertainment.

Meanwhile, LADA chief executive officer, Tan Sri Khalid Ramli said the strong interests shown by the Guangzhou travel agents should be taken as a signal for the Langkawi tourism players to prepare for bigger number of arrivals from China.

He said that it would be a matter of time for Chinese tourists, currently the second largest behind Middle Eastern travellers, to become the biggest number of visitors to Langkawi. – Bernama
