Putra Jaya: Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB) has finalised a RM2.58 billion (US$630 million) order for LEAP-1B engines with CFM International to power 25 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.CFM International, the world's leading supplier of commercial aircraft engine, is a 50-50 joint company between General Electric (GE) and Safran Aircraft Engines.

Malaysia Airlines, in a statement, said the engine order was scheduled for delivering beginning 2020.

An agreement to seal the deal between MAB and CFM International was signed Thursday witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The statement also said that MAB had purchase rights for 25 additional LEAP-1B-powered Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.

The LEAP-1B engine promises to be the most advanced, reliable, fuel-efficient powerplant for the Boeing 737 MAX family.

The statement added that the lower weight and higher durability of the engine resulted in a 15 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency, with an equivalent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

"We believe the new LEAP engine will bring even better operating economics in terms of fuel efficiency with the same reliability we have come to expect from CFM," said MAB Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Peter Bellew in the statement.

Malaysia Airlines, a long-time CFM56 operator, currently has a fleet of 54 CFM 56-7B-powered Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

The signing was also witnessed by MAB Chairman Tan Sri Mohd Nor Mohd Yusof and GE Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Immelt.

At the same event, GE Asean President and Chief Executive Officer Wouter van Wersch and Bellew signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on leadership development and continuous improvement.

In a statement, GE said in line with MAB's ongoing restructuring and transformation plan, it would work hand-in-hand with MAB in supporting the need for leadership development across MAB's group of companies.

The initiatives would include, but not limited to, specific GE unique programmes and value propositions such as Work-out, Change Acceleration Process (CAP), Fastworks, Lean SixSigma, Leadership Innovation & Strategy as well as customised programmes tailored for the needs of MAB, it added. – Bernama
