Ranau: Villagers and teachers living near a primary school here were shocked when a slope close to one of the school buildings collapsed and hit the wall of the building on Wednesday night.Fortunately, no one was injured in the 7pm incident at SK Tagudon Lama.

Chief Education Officer of Ranau, Hamne Siti Hashim, when contacted, said the incident was the first to have happened at the school.

"The landslide happened following heavy rain since Tuesday. The long dry weather before this could have loosened the soil structure," she said.

An inspection, she added, showed silt mud and murky water were flowing in the area.

However, Hamne said the situation was under control and the school authority had arranged to allow the affected students to study in other temporary classrooms.

"We have asked the Headmaster of SK Tagudon Lama, Hamdan Taip, to make sure all valuable items and equipment and important documents in the building were moved to another building as a safety measure.

"We have also reported the matter to the State Education Department and the Ranau Public Works Department," she added.

Hamne said teaching and learning in SK Tagudon Lama proceeded as usual on Thursday.

SK Lama Tagudon, located about 36 kilometres from Ranau town, has 64 students, including nine pre-school pupils and 13 teachers.
