Gang leader among four killed in shootout

Ipoh: The most notorious gang in Perak, the 'Don Tiger' gang, was busted after its leader and three underlings were shot dead by police Thursday night. Perak police deputy chief Datuk Hasnan Hassan said the four, aged between 20 and 30, were killed in a shootout at Jalan Ampang Baru, Tambun here. "Two of the suspects had criminal records, including stealing vehicles and robbery while the other two were wanted by police over several robberies," he told a press conference at the Ipoh police headquarters here Friday.

Hasnan said the gang, which had been active since August last year, was believed to be involved in many armed robberies around Ipoh and Kampar with losses amounting to almost RM1 million.He said based on investigations, the gang was involved in four cases of armed robbery in Ipoh and Kampar; two robberies without weapons; one criminal intimidation with firearms; one burglary; one vehicle theft; and one case involving a fight."The gang was also involved in the attempted murder of a police outrider who was on duty on Dec 2, 2015 as well as the recent robbery at the Econsave Supermarket (in Tambun) this month," he said.Hasnan said police were now tracking down remnants of the gang.

On Thursday's shootout, Hasnan said it occurred when a police team on patrol tried to trail a Honda Accord car that was being driven suspiciously.He said on noticing the presence of the police, a gunshot was fired from the Honda Accord.
