Kota Kinabalu: Regular checks are important as a preventive measure against cataract problems, said Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) Director Dr Heric Corray. He said patients often assume that vision problems are common, thinking that they are due to old age and do not require further treatment.

"Early treatment is vital especially when symptoms of cataracts develop like cloudy and blurry vision, double vision, glare during the day and sudden changes in the glasses prescription," he said when officiating at the 1Malaysia Cataract Surgery Carnival (KK1M) and Tour of the Day Care Ward at QEH, here, recently.

According to Dr Corray, cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye caused by protein build up and can cause progressive loss of vision, particularly to those aged 50 and above.

"KK1M was established because cataract is identified as one of the main factors to blindness and vision problems in Malaysia.

"The society should be made aware that vision problems can be corrected if a cataract problem is detected and treated at an early stage," he explained.

KK1M which was held from Sept 16-18, aimed to help solve vision problems with the hope of creating a cataract-free zone in the State. More than 65 patients received treatment during the programme.

At the event, the Rotary Club and Malaysian Ophthalmology Society also offered assistance in a form of partial financing of the cost of treatment for cataract patients.

Also present were Kota Kinabalu Rotary Club Chairman Jeyan Marimuttu and Likas Rotary Club Chairman Maureen Lind.
